The Importance of Hydration

The Importance of Water Intake During Pregnancy

“How are you doing with your water intake? Are you staying hydrated?”  These questions have been rolling off my tongue during this remarkably hot Seattle summer.  Hydration is always important at any stage of life, but especially important during pregnancy.  So here’s a quick Q&A regarding this important topic:

How much water should you drink per day?
Approximately two liters (or eight glasses) per day is how much you should be drinking. If you live or work in hot or humid conditions, then perhaps you need to take on more than this amount.  Remember to adjust for hot weather and for water loss during exercise.

Do I need to drink more water if I’m exercising?
If you’re exercising during pregnancy, then yes, you may need more water before, during and after your workout session.  Drinking water should form part of your exercise routine, so always have some on-hand.  Take sips throughout your session and get plenty of water afterward.

What’s the best way to drink water?
During pregnancy, I’d suggest drinking water “little and often”, so drink small amounts, and sip regularly throughout the day.  If you’re not a fan of drinking water on its own, perhaps you could supplement with decaffeinated fruit teas, as these won’t dehydrate you.  Or add a bit of citrus to the water for a burst of flavor.  Caffeinated drinks like coffee, regular tea and green tea (unless you buy the decaffeinated version) will dehydrate you, so make the switch to plain water, or fruit teas instead.  Experiment with the flavors and see what you prefer.  There are many varieties available and you are bound to find something that you enjoy!

What happens if I don’t drink enough water?
Lack of water when exercising aerobically, or not drinking enough water when you’re in warmer environments can lead to dehydration.  Dehydration can have unpleasant side effects such as dry skin and constipation, but can also lead to dangerous overheating for both you and baby.  This overheating can result in a number of serious complications including preterm labor.

So, this means I will make even more trips to the restroom?
Yes, it’s likely!  In the early stages of pregnancy and late into your pregnancy, you’ll feel like you’re going to the restroom every five minutes.  I understand how frustrating, time-consuming and inconvenient this is.  Despite this inconvenience though, it’s important that you do empty your bladder and drink water.

Are urinary tract infections common?
Yes, urinary tract infections are more common if you are dehydrated.  Having a urinary tract infection at the best of times is not great, and even more troublesome when pregnant!  So, you guessed it!  The best thing to do to avoid getting an infection, is to drink water.

How do I know if I’m dehydrated?
Apart from a feeling of being thirsty, the best test is to check out the color of your urine.  Sounds a bit strange, but, if it’s not pale, then you’re not drinking enough water!

Cheers!
